Green StormWater Infrastructure
GSI - Green StormWater Infrastructure
January 31, 2022
Revitalization of a neighborhood through GSI - Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters Program and the American Street Corridor Project Green City program was created in 2011, this decade long goal consists of around 800 sites. American Street, one of these Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) projects, is a historic wide rail corridor around American Street.

It rains more now, many storm water management systems along roadways and neighborhoods are over taxed and when it rains hard it floods. In Philadelphia there are many areas which have been assessed as flood prone areas. They have a shared sewer / StormWater management system. When it rains hard Philadelphian’s, poo goes into the Delaware river. One solution is this new method of setting up a rain garden with trees and drilling storm water pipes vertically directly into the Aquifer below. This is just one out of the box solution to mitigate StormWater through diverting the water from the overtaxed shared storm water / sewer system.

American Street - Green StormWater Infrastructure
Once 8 rail lines across then became a superwide business district road 8 lines.
Philadelphia's stormwater infrastructure is shared so your poop may go in the river when it rains.
Philadelphia looks for solutions to help manage stormwater. They redesigned the once completely paved area and made it into a storm water rain garden which filters the storm water then it goes into new telephone pole size bores directly into the aquafer below diverting the stormwater from the taxed storm water system. Storm water permaculture stormwater sequestration.
There was outreach to the community, then they designed different designs, a business friendly district with more parking and a residential with more open space and greenery in the other areas.
Stormwater Metrics
5 times the size of any previous Green Stormwater Infrastructure project in Philadelphia.
For each 2-inch rainfall event the project absorbs 1.4 million gallons of stormwater runoff
Adds 50 greened acres
